Sir Richard Taylor and Greg Broadmore - at Dr Grordbort's Exceptional Exhibition

Opportunity:

New Zealand’s Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop presented Christchurch with the chance to host the exceptional exhibition of the magical sci-fi world of Dr Grordborts. However, the costs associated with freight, insurance, and installation, including securing a venue, were prohibitive – $250,000K.

Strategic approach:

Wendy Folau collaborated with Sir Richard Taylor, Greg Broadmore and the Weta Workshop team to devise a profitable delivery and installation strategy for the exhibition. Her aim was to inspire people, especially young people, by allowing them to experience creative genius firsthand.

Key components of Wendy’s strategy included:

  • Sponsorship Acquisition: Securing sponsors to cover significant parts of the cost.
  • Public Relations and media
  • Creative Lab: Organising a one-day creative lab led by the Weta Workshop team.
  • Living the Dream Event: Hosting a TED-talk style event titled “Living the Dream,” featuring Sir Richard Taylor, targeted at school children and their parents.
  • Merchandise sales.
  • Corporate Events.

Commitment and impact:

The commitment for the entire venture was to stimulate and inspire young minds by bringing the retro-science fiction world of Dr Grordborts Exceptional Exhibition to Christchurch. The exhibition featured fantastical creatures, tanks, curious arcane weapons, buffoons, moon mistresses, and bizarre alien trophies, all coming together to form the satirical sci-fi world of Dr Grordborts.

Challenges and solutions:

Despite the initial challenges, Wendy’s expertise was called into action to ensure the exhibition’s success. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, she navigated the obstacles, ultimately bringing a unique and enriching experience to Christchurch.
